Oh no! They look a bit leggy (that's a technical term I'm been told to use). My plan would be to find some more seeds and put 'em straight in the ground outside where you want them to pop up. I've planted some, but haven't been able to wrestle the camera away from you know who yet to take pictures. But I will. I'm a determined bear.

I ended up planting mine deep in the soil because they are so spindly when you start them inside. Next year, I'm planting mine straight outside and not starting them in the house.

I don't think it was Bob's poo, jus the way they are!

I want to participate in the walk for life (ours was last weekend) but my foot still isn't up to it!

Hey, Bob!

BUmmer about the sunflowers. I do NOT have a green paw, so I have no idea what could be going on. I hope you don't have to start over, but if you do, I think it's a great idea to plant them straight in the ground. Why not?

Your mama and Dilly are VERY COOL for doing the race for life! I'd like to do that sometime with my girl, and run for my aunt Kelly. She's a cancer survivor and we all in GooberStan REALLY love her!

Goober love & smooches for you AND the sunflowers,
Stanley

Pee Ess
I see Dilly DID put a bow on her flower pot. I thought for SURE that would help!

Oooooooooo! Wish I had space for a sunflower. Good luck. And whatever you do - keep Madame away from your sunflowers - she is the Death of Green Stuff!

Mima said...

Bob, so sorry to hear about your sunflowers, I am also trying to grow stuff, some of which is succeeding, and some is failing miserably!

Thanks for your concern, I'm afraid that I don't have a bear to look after me, but I do have a lovely black cat who needs lots of cuddling and spends her time looking after me instead!

I think it must have been the sudden heat that did it! The race for life looked like a lot of fun :-)

Dear Bob and Dilly,
It's not your fault, it is your soil! Your seeds are probably dying off from the terrible bacterial disease called "Damp Off." It's a bacteria in dirt that kills off all seedlinga. Yes, you can try saving the best, but not probably gonna happen.

The good news is, it doesn't take sunflower seeds long to come up again, but they need a good start with "soiless potting mix" or, better yet, "Seedstarter soil." These are both sterile soil used by container gardeners like us -- the Garden Gals (Teddy T. and Spaulding's wives and daughters, but we're the wives, a'cuz a properly written 'splanation is required!)

Also, before putting the soil into the pots, you need to sterilize the pots too, using hot soapy water and a little chlorine first. Scrub hard, a'cuz pots can be sneaky 'bout keeping their much loved soil. If'n you fear the pots are too hard to clean (self-watering pots have a bunch of crevices that are impossible to reach), use new pots.

Now, of course, bear or crocogator fertilizer is good for the soil, so that's not the cause. (Our hubbies have been fertilizing everything for us now. We had to stop them from fertilizing their own grill at one point!)

Don't worry 'bout starting over. We just started sowing our sunflowers last week, and we still have plans to grow smaller ones, (Teddy Bear Sunflowers) too, so we know there is plenty of time left in the gardening season to sow more seeds.

Hope we helpeded!

Your Lucky Gnome-Magic Gardening Gals,
Valentine T. and Lady T. Bears
